When it comes to productivity, one of the ways that my clients are the toughest on themselves is with the belief that they should be better at managing time but somehow, they “can’t manage their time.”
The truth is, they can’t.
And neither can you.
Time can’t be managed.
You can only ever manage yourself and where you place your energy and attention.
Most people have a list of things to do, and things they want to do that will forever feel in competition.
There are some magical days where everything seems to make it in, and other days when it feels like really important things get missed.
Here is one simple and potent tool that I use that will genuinely change the feeling of never having enough time:
Stop saying,
“I don’t have time.
I ran out of time.
There wasn’t enough time for…”
And instead, say, “I chose not to…”
It’s edgy because it immediately challenges you to take back ownership of your time.
It may not always feel like you are choosing where to put your time, but you actually are.
You’re just not always conscious of your choice when you choose it.
These choices are stressed or overwhelmed, habitual, co-dependent, and compulsive choices.
But they are choices.
Using the phrase “I choose to (or not to)…” brings your attention to the fact that you do have a choice. If you are reading this email, you do, too.
