To sound more persuasive and confident, there is one mighty rule I’d like to share from an incredibly convincing, humble, and influential friend.
It’s called the Present-Tense Rule.
The Present-Tense rule states that speaking in the present-tense, like using the word “is“, is way more persuasive than speaking in past-tense and using the word “was”
Here’s an example:
“The candidate we interviewed was great. I thought their resume was impressive.”
Now here’s the same sentence following the Present-Tense Rule.
“The candidate we interviewed is great, and their resume is impressive.”
Do you notice the difference?
Using the word “is” and staying in the present allows you to assert your thoughts and opinions with confidence. While there are many skills that go into improving your influence – smiling, timing your responses, showing (or not showing) interest in others, etc. – I love the Present-Tense Rule because it is such a simple trick! It’s not well known and it has a tremendous impact.
Watch out for how you present your ideas and opinions. Think before you speak, and make the decision to share your point of view confidently. Remember, confidence is a byproduct of taking action. Today, it’s using the Present-Tense rule; tomorrow, it’s taking on bigger roles. Leaders who communicate without fear convey what they want to their clients and co-workers clearly and efficiently. Bring it!
