How do you know when a negotiation has been successful?
Most people that I’ve advised respond “when you walk away with a win-win scenario.” Each side gives a little, but everyone walks away happy. Some of my clients will also say it’s “when you walk away, having understood that it was no longer a good deal for you.”
Both are true.
And there’s more. World-class negotiators are those who genuinely can say that they understood and addressed the other side’s problem. A critical step for long term relationships.
One of the most common mistakes rookie negotiators make is only thinking about short-term gains and not knowing what their counterpart is ultimately trying to achieve.
Understanding the whole story, including the other’s side wishes and fears, is the homework you must complete before you enter into negotiations. Successful negotiators master this game. They enter the conversation prepared, with an open mind, a strategy, and the confidence to navigate the process in a way that enhances the relationship with their counterpart.
If you are serious about moving up in your career you must also consider learning about the nuances of the persuasion process.
