Ever found yourself in a situation where you’re pushing too hard to get your point across?
You’re not alone.
Many of us have been there, but there’s a better way. It starts with understanding your audience.
Focus on What Your Audience Values
Nothing.
Else.
Matters.
First things first – you must understand your audience. If you don’t know what they value, you have no right to propose anything to them. It’s like trying to sell the idea of vaccination to an anti-vaxxer. Futile.
If you are serious about becoming an influential leader, there is no excuse; you must dig deep and figure out what makes them (your board of directors, your boss, your team) tick.
If you do not have the time to do that, you are not serious about being an influential leader.
Tailor Your Message
Once you’ve figured out what matters to them, it’s time to tailor your message. Use their language, address their needs, and watch how much smoother the conversation flows.
It’s all about speaking to their truth, not yours.
Avoid Pushiness
Let’s address the elephant in the room – pushiness.
When you lack insight into your audience’s values, it’s easy to become pushy, passive-aggressive, or just throw in the towel way too soon.
But trust me, that’s a surefire way to kill any chance of persuasion.
Instead, stay patient, stay calm, and keep the dialogue open.
The foundation of mastering persuasion is about understanding your audience, tailoring your message, and ditching the pushiness.
Persuasion is a skill that takes time and practice, but the payoff is worth it.
