Assertiveness is a critical leadership trait that helps you, as the leader, to communicate effectively, make tough decisions, and drive results.
But you (and most leaders) know that already.
However, I witness leaders who completely miss the mark on this critical skill day in and day out, and it’s hurting them.
Here are 3 Telltale Signs to Look Out For (and what to do instead)
1. Avoiding Difficult Conversations: Are you sweeping tough issues under the rug? If you shy away from addressing challenging topics and prefer to let them linger, you are lacking assertiveness.
Instead, get super clear about the outcome you seek before starting the conversation. Also, get clear on the consequences of NOT embracing tough conversations. I know without a doubt that your team will respect your transparency and appreciate your willingness to tackle what most won’t.
2. People-Pleasing Syndrome: Constantly striving to keep everyone happy is exhausting (and impossible). Listen, I am not saying it is not important to consider others’ perspectives; it is. However, if you prioritize people-pleasing over making decisions, you will struggle with assertiveness.
Instead, remember that leadership isn’t about winning a popularity contest. Shift your focus from seeking approval to making decisions based on their impact on your team’s goals, overall productivity, and financial implications. Nothing else.
3. Micromanaging Madness: Are you constantly hovering over your team members’ shoulders, unable to trust them to get the job done? Micromanaging is a sign of insecurity (yours.) Insecure leaders are not assertive because they do not know when to assert themselves strategically, so they do it all the time in the form of micromanaging.
Instead, delegate tasks clearly and with a timeline. Do not leave tasks open or unchecked. Use your 1:1s to assert yourself if your team is slacking or missing the mark. Your team will feel accountable, and your leadership confidence will skyrocket.
It is not easy to move from these behaviors and instantly become an assertive leader, especially if you have never practiced assertiveness.
Assertiveness is a skill that can be developed regardless of your culture, upbringing, or personality traits.
