Are you in the process of looking for a new role? If so, having a great interviewis one critical aspect of the process.
In my 30-year career in Human Resources, I have conducted dozens of job interviews and below I share three of the most irritating mistakes that I see potential hires make repeatedly.
Avoid these pitfalls and set yourself up for hiring success.
Top 3 Interview Mistakes (and how to avoid them!)
#1. Arriving too early
This applies in person or via video. Arriving too early can irritate the hiring manager. Believe it or not, this can be as disruptive to their schedule as being late!
My tip: Arrive no more than 10 minutes early. That’s the sweet spot.
#2. Not bringing your resume
The hiring manager should have your resume handy, but sometimes they don’t. Have it printed out on paper shows that you are thoughtful and prepared.
#3. Focusing too much on yourself
Taking a long time to explain what your needs are and how much you want this job is off-putting to a hiring manager. Instead, take an active interest in the organization. Make sure to balance your message by being open about yourself and curious about the company, the team and the role.
Hiring managers are not there to help you out.
Their primary interest is to learn how you can help them and their organization. While there are many tips to ace your interview, the ones I share here are designed to make the hiring manager’s job easier. Do this and you may just find yourself with an offer you can’t resist.
You’ve got this.
