A couple of weeks ago, we hosted the 5th annual International Women’s Leadership Academy, and boy, do they just keep getting better and better! Each year, we focus on the art and science of High Performance Leadership. We use data and research from our most trusted organizations to help inform and prepare leaders to effectively lead and communicate so that they can reach their next level of success.
With her latest certification from Harvard University, Mari Carmen’s content this year was second to none. Want to know what was at the heart of her message? This super successful, well-educated, bold, no-nonsense coach and teacher spent 2 whole days talking about …. Emotions.
Emotions?!
You heard right. Mari Carmen studied and mentored under Harvard’s world-class negotiators running significant global initiatives. She showed up to her classes expecting to get the inner secrets to winning the YES every time. And what she learned was both surprising and humbling: Observing, respecting, and managing emotions is the key to success in every negotiation.
Each and every company is simply an institution of human beings who work there. Organizations are not entities beyond arm’s reach, but rather, they are what we create them to be.
This is why managing emotions is central to company success. When we raise our awareness about how all parties feel about the decisions we want to make and the paths we want to take, we can also increase our sense of compassion and empathy. In doing so, we create a spirit of solidarity that ensures that we’re in this together, after the same common good. This is the difference between manipulation and influence. Manipulation happens when people regret what they’ve been “sold.” Influence occurs when people are proud of the decisions they were led to make.
Are you looking ahead to your next negotiation?
It may be in the boardroom, but it may also be in the living room. Either way, stay alert to the emotional complexities of the room and manage accordingly.
And if you need help optimizing your negotiations, let us know. The Academy is only one of the many things we offer at Whole Leadership Systems to help leaders show up powerfully and win the YES. Email us at [email protected] for more information, and be sure to attend our next Academy in 2023.
Invest in learning the proven strategies that will help you gain the confidence to ask for what you want and lead with confidence. And remember, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
With love,
