How to be perceived as the leader when working remotely
You may already feel you’ve mastered the skills required to be a good leader. You are decisive, a great problem solver, you incite others to action — but do all these traits transfer well to a virtual setting?
There is one skill that will help you with that, and it’s so simple that you will be tempted to dismiss it.
Not mastering this skill may be getting in the way of your continued growth as a leader in a world that has now gone virtual.
This skill is communication. But I’m not talking about polished, poised verbal communication. I am referring to the skill of communicating quickly and in writing, especially under our current circumstances: By this I mean TEXT, EMAIL, VIDEO CHAT…
And to communicate right you must TYPE FAST and Accurately!
In a recent study performed at the University of Iowa, researchers placed two sets of participants in different rooms. Participants were educated professionals in management roles, but nobody knew who was in the other room.
And all they had to do was communicate by text.
The goal of the study was to determine if an individual’s ability to communicate in writing fast and accurately will influence his or her likelihood of being perceived as a leader.
What they found was that fast typers, who also communicated with accuracy, were more likely to be perceived as leaders by their colleagues.
The theory is that fast typers are able to communicate more information in less time. This skill enabled the fast typers to drive conversations and influence others faster than their peers.
As a leader, you must choose the most appropriate communication tool depending on the context; whether it is text, video chat, email, or instant messaging and now you know you must work on your typing skills to make a greater impact.
