Do you hear yourself saying, “I just don’t have the time!” or “Only, if I had more time I would…” I get it. I’ve been there. We all have deeply rooted habits that have created the way we view and use time. Is it really lack of time management skills or is it the choices we make that rob us of having more time? In this article, we will unlock 5 ways to gain more time in our lives.
“Those who make the worst use of their time are the first to complain of its brevity.”
–Jean De La Bruyere
Changing any aspect of life can be challenging, especially when the change threatens deep-rooted habits, relationships and emotions. It’s easier to say, “I don’t have the time!” However, this isn’t true in all circumstances especially when we relate it to having a happier life.
It’s when we see others who seem to have it all together that we may look at our own situation and question, “What’s my problem?”
These are the defining moments when we know that it’s time to create space to improve that one thing you’ve been considering for months, but you just haven’t taken the time to do something about it.
So let’s focus on how to create space in our lives for what’s important to YOU.
Let me ask;
Considering that we all have 24 hours in a day, why do some people get more done?
Why are some people better with their time?
What habits, personality traits, experiences, or skills lend to more efficient uses of our time?
I have found 5 simple ways to get it together and improve how we manage ourselves:
- Study highly successful people. You know the ones you admire because of their organizational skills and ability to manage stress. The ones that get more done in less time. What are they doing that you are not?
- Do a brain dump. Honestly, one of the best exercises you can do for yourself is to get what’s in your head onto paper. This helps free your mind to think more clearly and gain perspective.
- Prioritize what’s most important. After that brain dump, take a few minutes to go over the priority. Get in the habit of looking at your priorities every morning. This will lend to a more productive day and diminish that feeling of frustration at the end of the day when you didn’t accomplish anything on your list.
- Learn to delegate. Whether at home or at work, partner up with others who can help you take the load off. There is tremendous return on investment when we delegate; do the math and you’ll see. Besides, there’s nothing wrong with enlisting the help of others to help you be more productive.
- Give yourself a break. For goodness sake! The most successful movers and shakers take breaks. They take vacations. They read. They workout. They meditate. Because they are selfish? No–because they have learned the value of rejuvenating by walking away and finding ways to enjoy life.
Okay, so I gave you five things to do. Knowing that you’re already on a time crunch, guess what — those five things will be the time savers you’ve been looking for. Making wise choices of how you will spend your time isn’t rocket science, it is common sense. Go ahead change a habit today!
